History of Sanford

The city was established in 1870 when founding father Henry Shelton Sanford purchased a tract of land to the west of Mellonville, an 1830s army outpost that had become a town. The founder believed that his newly established city would become a major transportation hub. Accordingly, he called it “the Gate City of South Florida.” Incorporation came in 1877, and Mellonville was annexed just a few years later. The South Florida Railroad built a terminus here and with the wharves, the city was thriving.
The earliest industrial efforts in the area were in the realm of agriculture. Nearly 150 varieties of citrus were tested here for their suitability in the local climate. A massive fire in the 1880s and freezing conditions in the 1890s forced changes and modernization. New buildings of brick were constructed even as farmers began experimenting with growing vegetables. Celery was such a successful crop that the city became known as the “Celery City” for several decades.

With the addition of a thriving Farmers’ Market each weekend and many unique shops and restaurants, downtown is an extremely popular gathering place.
