Charming, historic Sanford lies on the shores of Lake Monroe. Its storied past and bright future make it a popular hometown for families of all descriptions. Despite boasting a population of more than 57,000, the city maintains a small-town feel that appeals to just about everyone. With so much to recommend it, it is no surprise that real estate in the area is much in demand.
With a median household income of $40,000, the city boasts many opportunities for growth. Major industries include tourism, healthcare, retail and agriculture. With many local businesses thriving, good economic times seem primed to continue. Plus, the public schools are all well-regarded within Seminole County.
History of Sanford
The city was established in 1870 when founding father Henry Shelton Sanford purchased a tract of land to the west of Mellonville, an 1830s army outpost that had become a town. The founder believed that his newly established city would become a major transportation hub. Accordingly, he called it “the Gate City of South Florida.” Incorporation came in 1877, and Mellonville was annexed just a few years later. The South Florida Railroad built a terminus here and with the wharves, the city was thriving.
The earliest industrial efforts in the area were in the realm of agriculture. Nearly 150 varieties of citrus were tested here for their suitability in the local climate. A massive fire in the 1880s and freezing conditions in the 1890s forced changes and modernization. New buildings of brick were constructed even as farmers began experimenting with growing vegetables. Celery was such a successful crop that the city became known as the “Celery City” for several decades.
Things to do in Sanford
Now, the city is the county seat of Seminole County and is called the “Historic Waterfront Gateway City.” Seminole State College is located here, and the charming downtown district is a major draw for locals and tourists. The district was extensively renovated in recent years, improving streets and sidewalks as well as installing benches, flowers and trees. With the addition of a thriving Farmers’ Market each weekend and many unique shops and restaurants, downtown is an extremely popular gathering place.
The city also boasts a well-regarded zoo and botanical gardens. Other attractions include the many city parks, which include facilities like playgrounds, sports fields, areas for dogs and many trails. The Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center and the local museum provide cultural outlets for locals. One of the most popular attributes in the city is the RiverWalk trail. Located along the St. John’s River, the trail is a multi-use facility for cyclists, walkers and runners.
City residents can expect to enjoy a calendar full of activities. The fun begins in January with the MLK, Jr. Parade and continues with a short film festival in February. Spring brings fun events like the Pints ‘N Paws Craft Beer Festival, the Easter Eggstravaganza and the St. John’s River Festival of the Arts. May brings around one of the top events in the region: the All-American Soap Box Derby. Community celebrations are held in honor of July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Locals have plenty of transportation options at their disposal. These include the Central Florida commuter rail system known as the SunRail. A trolleybus takes riders from the station to downtown. Additionally, the city is located close to I-4. The local international airport is a convenient alternative to the Orlando International Airport.
