The New Downtown Oviedo

Sprawling Oviedo

It’s not uncommon to meet Oviedo residents that remember the downtown for what it used to look like and that’s because like now, people are finding Oviedo to be a great place to lay down roots. This recent boom in growth has caused somewhat of a problem for the original downtown Oviedo. Smashed in between 419, 434 and 426 is the original downtown Oviedo and as of the last two years, the city has been tearing down buildings and homes from the early 1900’s to make way for road expansion. If you have driven through the downtown corridor during rush or school hour you have experienced the traffic caused by the uniquely designated intersections. Like most small areas, forecasting of growth was not a part of the original footprint in downtown Oviedo planning and this has caused those issues. Besides the traffic, there is not a central hub of commerce or entertainment within the city and residents often leave the city for a day or night on the town.

Downtown Oviedo back in 1940

The city has seen the trend in growth and are in the midst of developing the new Downtown Oviedo, called Oviedo on the Park. Nestled along Mitchell Hammock in between Oviedo Road and Central Avenue, this multi-use development will feature residential, retail and commercial projects all centered around the Lake. An amphitheater has been built to attract music lovers. A splash pad for kids and a grassy knoll facing an amphitheater provide family entertainment throughout the year. It also features some of the largest events in the city including: A Great Day in the Country, monthly Movie in the Parks, Bark & Brew, Mardi Gras, Oktoberfest, 12 Days of Christmas, and more! A small dog area and a nice veterans memorial are also open to residents and guests.

Also in development is a Wellness Village that will feature holistic medicine, spas, chiropractors, medical centers, yoga studios, acupuncture, and the like.
